Running on Windows 98/Me

By default, Pidgin does not fully work on Windows 98/Me. It can be made to work, for the most part, by following a few steps. First, install the GTK Legacy 2.6.10. It will automatically install and be used from the PortableApps\CommonFiles directory.

Second, you will need to manually update your preferences file to get around a bug in GTK 2.6.10 that causes Pidgin to crash when you open your preferences Window (bug 2353). In your PidginPortable\Data\settings\.purple directory, open the prefs.xml file in a text editor like Notepad++ Portable. Scroll down and within the <pref name='pidgin'> section, find the <pref name='conversations'> section. Add an entry <pref name="custom_font" type="string" value="arial 9" /> and save the file. This will set a custom font to get around the bug. It's important to note that this bug will not be fixed as support for Windows 9x has been dropped.
